Antibodies to GBM occur in glomerulonephritis and Goodpasture Syndrome. Rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (RPGN) is characterized by crescentic glomerulonephritis.

Using the above criteria RPGN may be classified into:

1. Immune complex mediated disease characterized by the presence of anti-DNA antibodies or anti-streptococcal antibodies.
2. Glomerular basement membrane (GBM) mediated glomerulonephritis and Goodpasture syndrome.
3. Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) associated glomerulonephritis.
